Khay I.: Pagadian mission

Pagadian in Zamboanga del Sur is located in Mindanao, the second largest island of the Philippines. Fishing and farming are the main livelihood of the people. Together with No One in Need and Missionary Families of Christ, we visited the city in 2019. One of our volunteers was Khay. Let us get to know more about her and her thoughts on participating in medical missions.

Can you give us a brief detail about your background?

My name is Carroll (Khay) Ilog. I was born and raised in the Philippines until I was 15 years old. I was then adopted and left the Philippines. I am married and have three boys. I studied nursing in Visalia, California and has been working with Sutter Care since 2004.

What inspired you to join the medical mission?

Just like how others have helped me growing up, what inspired me to join the medical mission was that I would like to be of help to others as well. We were poor growing up in the Philippines but I was able to go to school because of the sponsorship of Christian Children’s Fund (CCF). In the same way that someone helped me when I was a kid, I would like to give back to the community by doing medical missions.

How was your experience and what did you observe in the mission?

I have had a lot of experiences since doing the medical missions but the most unforgettable one was my very first one in 2018. It was in Jipapad, Eastern Samar which was in a very remote part of the Philippines. It was a very small island. There was no running water and no cars.

What has changed in you after the mission?

What changed in me since my very first medical mission is my outlook in life. Helping others and devoting myself to medical missions became a mission in itself for me. May the Lord God give me more time and resources to help and serve others in the future.

What do you look forward to in the upcoming missions?

I am always excited looking forward to doing medical missions. Every mission is different but I am always looking forward to help others by helping them. When I see the kababayans (fellow Filipinos) lining up every morning of the mission, it gives me great pleasure that “My Mission In Life is To Give My All” to those who are in need each and everyday of the medical mission.

My mission in life is to give my all.

Khay is an active member of SFCF. She works as a registered nurse.
